Electrifying Kalmar Services in Spain

In the busy port city of Algeciras, Spain, Kalmar's maintenance team has been taking active steps towards reducing the company's carbon footprint through electrification – both of customer equipment fleets and the company's own operations.

"In compliance with international regulations and the UN 2030 Agenda, we are currently immersed in the electrification process, both for our customers' machines and our service vehicles," says Juan Fernandez, On Demand Manager for Spain. "It is a big challenge to implement this entire procedure, but it's very clear that customers are beginning to demand this type of equipment and services."

While helping customers move towards their targets of zero-emissions operations, the Kalmar team has been taking strides to decarbonise the company's own service work. As the most visible sign of change, the Algeciras service team has been operating the first fully electric service vans in their fleet.

As for the electricity powering the van, an even larger upgrade to Kalmar's local infrastructure is invisible from the street but unmissable from the air. Since 1 of November 2024, the roof of Kalmar's service workshop in Algeciras has been covered with an array of solar panels. In the generally sunny Mediterranean climate, the panels generate approximately 60,27 MWh of power per year, contributing a significant percentage of the site's total energy usage. Similar installations are already in place at several other Kalmar workshops in Spain.

Juan notes that the ongoing electrification of container handling equipment has direct effects on the work that Kalmar's service teams in the region are performing daily, which is also reflected in open job positions: "Experience with electric equipment is particularly valuable for us right now, so just as a tip – if you have the right background and interest in this type of work, by all means contact us!"
