Kalmar delivers six RTGs to Contecon Manzanillo in Mexico

2015 Press

CARGOTEC CORPORATION, PRESS RELEASE, 11 OCTOBER 2015 AT 10 (EET)

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has delivered six rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes to Contecon Manzanillo Sociedad Anopmina (CMSA), the Mexican subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), one of the world's leading container terminal operators. The order was booked into Cargotec's 2015 first quarter order intake.

The Port of Manzanillo is undertaking an ambitious expansion project to position itself as the leading port in Latin America. Fortino Landeros, General Manager at Contecon Manzanillo, said: "Container traffic has increased, even surpassing productivity targets for the new terminal, and existing port capacity has doubled. Today, we can confirm that we are meeting our commitment to make Manzanillo the country's leading port."

Meeting the challenges, CMSA has successfully used Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, RTG cranes, reachstackers and terminal tractors and turned again to Kalmar for the new project. The terminal is also using terminal operating system (TOS) from Navis, part of Cargotec.

"We ordered from Kalmar because we believe that their equipment is first class. They presented the best design and quality and Kalmar offers the best maintenance service for us. We work with Kalmar technicians who are here in Manzanillo to support our maintenance team to keep the equipment working at its optimum. The after-market services ensure that everything is working perfectly once the equipment arrives at the terminal, and on time to keep our customers satisfied," says Landeros.

Troy Thompson, Vice President, Sales in Kalmar Americas, said: "We are delighted that, once again, CMSA has specified Kalmar equipment. The port in Mexico is experiencing significant development and we are pleased to support the ICTSI group companies in their continuous global expansion. CMSA has been Kalmar's loyal customer for many years and our respective teams enjoy a close working relationship. This most recent order has been delivered in mid-October, ahead of the scheduled delivery time."

Kalmar E-One2 RTG features a low-emission diesel engine and an all-electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader. Because it uses no hydraulics, servicing is straightforward and there are fewer components to inspect and maintain. The E-One² RTG's maintenance interval of 1,000 hours is the industry's longest. The optional variable speed generator enables fuel consumption savings of up to 45 per cent by automatically optimising the engine's RPM according to the required power.

The RTG's were delivered with the necessary hardware pre-installed to support the Kalmar SmartPort process automation solutions, which CMSA will be deploying in the future. These include Kalmar SmartRail automated steering system for RTGs, Kalmar SmartLift automated job promotion and handoff solution between container handling equipment and trucks, and Kalmar SmartStack automated inventory solution. Factory installation of the Kalmar SmartPort hardware saves time, money, and additional customisation work for CMSA.
